As a child, he was recording songs from the radio and trying to learn them on the piano. Around nine years old, he began to study classical music which gave him a great foundation in music theory. At 10, his brother got him into electronics and he began programming basic rhythms on his Bontempi Organ.

His musical taste was eclectic as a child, he was listening to everything from Carlos Santana to classical music and theme songs from television shows and ads. He practiced everything. Kraftwerk had a big impact on young Claudio who loved their robot costumes and emulated their musical techniques and style. Earth, Wind & Fire expanded his musical taste to include disco and funk. As a teen he discovered jazz.

His classical piano teacher helped him get a job after school working on film compositions and computers. By the time he was 18, he was working full time in the recording studio, “which, of course, is something that doesn't really happen anymore,” said Claudio. “And yes, it was all about tape.”

Going Pro

Around 20 years old, Claudio went to Los Angeles to study orchestral composing and arranging. He also discovered Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones while in LA. He returned to Italy with many contacts and began recording jazz records and working as a session musician. There wasn’t a big scene for jazz, so he ended up playing pop music, as well as performing in an orchestra. He worked with artists including: Andrea Bocelli, Shakira and Pino Daniele. Additionally, Universal Music would call him up to play with artists like Bryan Adams.

At 30, Claudio decided to move to the UK with the intention of starting his own studio. He was still working mostly with his connections in Italy but started to expand his network in the UK. With his experience he put together the best people he worked with from his pop days, and started an online recording studio that embraced his love of synthesizers.

By the age of 34, Claudio launched the online studio under the name Doctor Mix, becoming one of the first online mixing, mastering and music production services to ever appear on the internet. Unlike today, when you can find millions of social media influencers showing off gear and offering production services, in 2006, Claudio was one of the early pioneers. The company took off and he got a venue in London and started hiring people to work with him.

Doctor Mix Explodes

Claudio started making YouTube videos in an attempt to get more business. At the beginning, it was all about gear, compressors, equalizers and product demonstrations. Then he started playing keyboards and people loved it. The videos blew up, especially when he started playing synthesizers. “I had this super viral video, it was called the Crazy Synthesizer demo,” said Claudio. In the video he shows a prototype of a computer and monitor fashioned as a synthesizer – a university project created by some people he had met at the time. “I invited them to the studio, set it up, and [said] we're going to play and we're gonna make a video about it,” explained Claudio.

The video went viral, reaching around 10 million views and driving the word “synthesizer” to trend on Google. Google called him up and explained that his channel was trending and began helping him expand his page. YouTube gave him studio space to film videos.

“They started giving me some advice. They said, ‘you definitely have to make more videos about synthesizers, look at the stats,’” said Claudio. “The stuff on mixing and mastering gets you this many views. Guess what happens when you do synthesizer stuff, this happens. So you should make more of them. And I sure did.”

He started renting synthesizers and taking them to the YouTube space to create two videos per synthesizer, playing it, demonstrating and explaining it and has now expanded his video library and audience exponentially.

Digital Innovation

Inspired by marketing guru Gary Vee, Claudio expanded his online studio and YouTube channel to think about himself as a media company and hired a full time video producer. His digital prowess has expanded into NFTs, which he has already sold a few. “The way I see it, this technology will revolutionize ownership, copyright distribution, how we interact with each other and the way we distribute and share music,” said Claudio.

“If you don't make content about your music, your music essentially does not exist,” said Claudio. “So the idea of learning how to play the camera, how to play the how to play Premiere Pro, for video editing and how to play the internet, press the right side keys to make the internet sound the way you want to, that is so vital…the one thing that I can say is make content because that's the only way to show your music. That's how you show your if you're a musician, you're in the show business, because that's what it is. It's entertainment.”

https://eap-spaces.fra1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/storage/newsfeed/event/bg_image/1/collage_efa3-image.jpg
Newsfeed::Event
GPU Audio joins our partners, AMD, to demonstrate how GPU Audio plugins can be used to enhance workflows of post production workstations.
