Emerging Products That Are Evolving Audio Production

Think everything in audio recording has been done before? Think again.

Keeping up in the audio industry means following the great new product drops and being aware of the established places in the space. From speakers and mics to new audio interfaces and gear, these new products will inspire you on your next project or collaboration.

Apogee

First up on our list is a newly released product for Symphony I/O MK II, the plug & play Immersive Audio for Atmos brought to us from the ubiquitous Apogee.

Mixing for Dolby Atmos and other immersive 3D formats is rapidly becoming an essential need and desire for the everyday creator and engineer. As streaming services highlight immersive content and record companies require immersive audio deliverables, you may be asking yourself “how do I get started”?

Symphony I/O Mk II Thunderbolt’s Monitor Workflows' modular system lets you configure and operate your system for Dolby Atmos, Sony 360 Reality Audio, and other immersive audio systems with control of up to 32 Speaker input and outputs. The big focus for Apogee with this new product seems to be democratizing the access to a Dolby Atmos plug and play. It’s always been a complicated set-up for folks just starting out, but thanks to so many recent developments in the Atmos world, Apogee is offering this exciting new product that makes big tech tools easier to utilize for the everyday mixer and creator to start making Atmos content.

That’s not all Apogee is delivering this year. The second new release is the latest revision to the Duet interface. Duet has been Apogee’s long running most popular interface. First introduced in 2007, it was a major component in the beginning of creators being able to use laptops within the production industry. Last fall Apogee introduced the Duet 3, the re-designed new product offers a new docking system and on-board hardware DSP that powers the Symphony ECS Channel Strip for zero-latency recording with FX. Tuned by legendary mixer, Bob Clearmountain, the ECS Channel Strip includes presets custom crafted by Clearmountain himself so you can dial in a pro recording sound instantly. Ideal for music creation, voice recording, streaming and even gaming.

Voyage Audio

Voyage Audio is debuting their all new microphone for spatial audio tech. Building off of the success of their original Dante mic, they have created a completely new mic, still with 8 capsules to capture entire sound fields but offering new sound capabilities with their latest revisions. This mic is capable of capturing quiet nature sounds, loud concerts or anything in between with capsule SNR of up to 78dB-A and 136 dB Max SPL

A hybrid analog-digital 2nd order ambisonic microphone featuring unmatched control, versatility and quality. Inspired by the success of their previous mic, the Voyage Audio, which is a light and compact Spatial Mic USB, this completely new microphone provides a premium rugged design with a locking Neutrik etherCON. In addition to that, they have added some very exciting plug in tools to help creatives take their work to the next level. The Spatial Mic Converter plugin transforms the raw unprocessed audio signals from Spatial Mic USB & the new Dante mic to a number of different formats suitable for any type of audio production. To accomplish this, Spatial Mic Converter uses an internal 64-channel filter matrix and measurements from an anechoic chamber. MicNet Control provides remote control of the analog stage and internal DSP processing of Spatial Mic Dante. Computers on the Dante network running MicNet Control can change the parameters of any microphone on the network.

MicNet Control can change the audio output format which is accomplished in the microphone itself via DSP. Output options include unprocessed (for Spatial Mic Converter Plugin), 1st order ambisonics, surround feeds and virtual mic mono or stereo pairs. These additional options beyond unprocessed audio open up many applications for live performance and broadcast when low latency audio feeds are needed. This incredible spatial mic is able to capture the entire soundfield with precision - letting you focus on recording immersive audio for VR, surround sound, spatial music, concert recording, live broadcasts and much more. Gone are the days of complex multi-microphone & preamp setups, now one can simply plug-in and record with Voyage Audio’s Dante mic.
